Following the fierce cold and icy grip that winter has spread across South Africa, we have received a generous blanket of snow on the mountains of our valley. The major peaks of the Central Drakensberg look magnificent under their elegant coat of gleaming white snow. This morning there was a heavy frost and all the plants, railings, fences and fixtures were covered with a layer of ice crystals, all catching the morning sun and glinting all colours of the rainbow briefly before melting. Although the Drakensberg is locked in the ice and cold of winter, our accommodation is cozy and warm with delightful thatched rooms offering a welcome comfort against the cold. At nights, the bar, with its log burning fire, is the ideal place to escape the chill and relax with a sherry before dinner. our six course dinner, served Monday to Saturday, is also a very good way to spend an evening escaping the cold!

The snow has arrived early this year and by most forecasts, we can expect a chilly season with a whole lot more snow on our mountains and in our valley.

The Nest Drakensberg Mountain Resort Hotel featured a stand at the annual Indaba Travel and Trade Show at the ICC in Durban.

This is always a brilliant platform to market our product to various agents and tour groups both locally and internationally.

It appears that there is healthy interest in South African tourism and particularly to the majestic Drakensberg where The Nest is based.

Although we are not situated on a main World Cup Soccer route, we have attracted the attention of a few tour operators who have booked rooms at our resort for a few days in June 2010.

One of the highlights of the 2010 Travel Indaba was that The Nest won the Hall of Fame accolade from the well-known AA Travel Guides American Express Travel Guides. This is a great honour for us and we wish to acknowledge and thank all staff and our motivated and service orientated team for all of their hard work and effort.

We also would like to thank the tour operators and agents who have loyally supported The Nest as well as all new contacts who we introduced our delightful Drakensberg resort to. We look forward to a long lasting and mutual beneficial relationship which we are sure will grow in future years.

This exposure and our award could not be achieved without the continued and much appreciated support of our many guests whom we have hosted over the last 7 decades.

We look forward to your continued support and invite you to experience the scenic majesty of the Drakensberg at The Nest’s unique and relaxing resort ambience.

The AmaZulu dance group of traditional Zulu dancers regularly perform at The Nest Drakensberg Resort Hotel and are regionally acclaimed as one of the best Zulu dance groups in KwaZulu Natal.

The group performs over most long weekends and guests are treated to a spectacle of the energetic traditional Zulu warrior dances whilst relaxing on the hotel verandah whilst teas and coffees are served.

The performance lasts a little over 45 minutes starting with lighter traditional song and dance and builds up to crescendo with the  men performing a series of energetic Zulu warrior dances to the pulse of the loud traditional Ngiuni skin (cow hide) drums.

We are hosting our annual Christmas in July over the weekend of the 16th to 18th July 2010.  Rates from R600 per person sharing. The Dining Room is set for a festive banquet on the evening of the 17th July, with a complimentary and heart warming sherry to begin with.

Begin your dining experience with a bowls of our famous Butternut Soup & Cinnamon Cream, richly rewarding and quite possibly South Africa’s favourite feel good soup!

Next up is the Beer Battered Kingklip with our Seafood Sauce, prepared with a dash of lemon and generous amounts of farm butter. A little dash of salt and fresh lemon juice creates a simple dish of varied tastes.

The vegetarian entrée is Potato Pancake served with Julienne Carrots and Green Beans. We use a bit of mozzarella in the potato mixture that ensures a golden and rich flavour, topped of with a little sour cream and herbs.

Turkey is the ubiquitous festive fare and our kitchen team excel at Roast Turkey with Sage Stuffing and Cranberry Sauce. Whole tins of fine cranberry jam are slowly melted and crafted into the yummiest accompaniment to hot oven roasted turkey. The bread and sage stuffing is an aromatic treat in itself.

The Cider Glazed Gammon provides a feast for the senses served up with the vegetables makes it a plate filled with yuletide joy. Quite possibly the golden roast potatoes contribute significantly to that joy

Our baker has an excellent recipe for Baked Chocolate Pudding served in cups with a sprinkling of toasted almonds and a drenching of chocolate sauce. A most decadent way to celebrate. Our Christmas pudding is already waiting for the big occasion and every so often, the baker pours on a bit more brandy to ensure a rich and magnificent flavour.

The Cheese and Biscuit platter might not tempt after all the above, however, we are confident that the array of delicious cheeses and biscuits will definitely have an allure for everyone.

Rooms are available from R600 per person sharing per night.
Including all meals, as well as the festive dinner, accommodation and morning & afternoon tea / coffee.

The Nest has once again celebrated a wonderful Easter weekend. This is a special time of year and we continue to hold our fun and festive traditions. The children’s Easter Egg Treasure Hunt is always a highlight for the kids. It is always a delight to see the little ones running from site to site following the clues until they are lead to a section of the garden filled with hidden chocolate treats where they spend a gleeful time of hunting for Easter eggs.

On Saturday we hosted our candle-lit dinner dance offering a six course dinner of scrumptious food served along with the beautiful live flute and saxophone music from a local artist. After dinner, the DJ plays some favourite tunes and people enjoyed a few moves on the dance floor.

Sunday sees more Eadter traditions with a sumptuous sparkling wine brunch served in our dining room and outside veranda. Guests then relax and take in the scenic majesty of the Drakensberg. The clear and sunny day drew to an elegant close as the golden afternoon sunlight cast it’s beams on the impressicve Amagoma Zulu Dancers as they charmed us with their powerful performance of traditional Zulu dance. The drums beat out an intense pitch, reverberation sounding down the valley.

A little while later, the decadent smells from the braai wafted across the lawn. The chefs were in action grilling the meat, hoping that the impending thunderstorm would hold off a few more minutes. The salads and oven hot rolls competed for space on the tables as guests helped themselves to the treats laid out. Once the last glass of wine and last offering from the cheeseboard were enjoyed, the magic began in the Cane Lounge. Arthur Reed and his wife performed their celebrated magic show, much to the eager rapture of the audience.

This weekend also saw us host a conference for a freight company, which was a great success. Team-building, business and fun were enjoyed by all the delegates.

As the weekend draws to a close, we wish all of our new friends a blessed Family day and safe journey on the roads.
